Matthew 25-26
Matthew Chapter 25
1âThen the Kingdom of Heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom. 2Five of them were foolish, and five were wise. 3Those who were foolish, when they took their lamps, took no oil with them, 4but the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps. 5Now while the bridegroom delayed, they all slumbered and slept. 6But at midnight there was a cry, âBehold! The bridegroom is coming! Come out to meet him!â 7Then all those virgins arose, and trimmed their lamps. 8The foolish said to the wise, âGive us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.â 9But the wise answered, saying, âWhat if there isnât enough for us and you? You go rather to those who sell, and buy for yourselves.â 10While they went away to buy, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went in with him to the wedding feast, and the door was shut. 11Afterward the other virgins also came, saying, âLord, Lord, open to us.â 12But he answered, âMost certainly I tell you, I donât know you.â 13Watch therefore, for you donât know the day nor the hour in which the Son of Man is coming. 14âFor it is like a man going into another country, who called his own servants and entrusted his goods to them. 15To one he gave five talents, to another two, to another one, to each according to his own ability. Then he went on his journey. 16Immediately he who received the five talents went and traded with them, and made another five talents. 17In the same way, he also who got the two gained another two. 18But he who received the one talent went away and dug in the earth and hid his lordâs money. 19âNow after a long time the lord of those servants came, and settled accounts with them. 20He who received the five talents came and brought another five talents, saying, âLord, you delivered to me five talents. Behold, I have gained another five talents in addition to them.â 21âHis lord said to him, âWell done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a few things, I will set you over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.â 22âHe also who got the two talents came and said, âLord, you delivered to me two talents. Behold, I have gained another two talents in addition to them.â 23âHis lord said to him, âWell done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a few things. I will set you over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.â 24âHe also who had received the one talent came and said, âLord, I knew you that you are a hard man, reaping where you didnât sow, and gathering where you didnât scatter. 25I was afraid, and went away and hid your talent in the earth. Behold, you have what is yours.â 26âBut his lord answered him, âYou wicked and slothful servant. You knew that I reap where I didnât sow, and gather where I didnât scatter. 27You ought therefore to have deposited my money with the bankers, and at my coming I should have received back my own with interest. 28Take away therefore the talent from him and give it to him who has the ten talents. 29For to everyone who has will be given, and he will have abundance, but from him who doesnât have, even that which he has will be taken away. 30Throw out the unprofitable servant into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.â 31âBut when the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then he will sit on the throne of his glory. 32Before him all the nations will be gathered, and he will separate them one from another, as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 33He will set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left. 34Then the King will tell those on his right hand, âCome, blessed of my Father, inherit the Kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world; 35for I was hungry and you gave me food to eat. I was thirsty and you gave me drink. I was a stranger and you took me in. 36I was naked and you clothed me. I was sick and you visited me. I was in prison and you came to me.â 37âThen the righteous will answer him, saying, âLord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you a drink? 38When did we see you as a stranger and take you in, or naked and clothe you? 39When did we see you sick or in prison and come to you?â 40âThe King will answer them, âMost certainly I tell you, because you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.â 41Then he will say also to those on the left hand, âDepart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire which is prepared for the devil and his angels; 42for I was hungry, and you didnât give me food to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave me no drink; 43I was a stranger, and you didnât take me in; naked, and you didnât clothe me; sick, and in prison, and you didnât visit me.â 44âThen they will also answer, saying, âLord, when did we see you hungry, or thirsty, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and didnât help you?â 45âThen he will answer them, saying, âMost certainly I tell you, because you didnât do it to one of the least of these, you didnât do it to me.â 46These will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.â
Matthew Chapter 26
1When Jesus had finished all these words, he said to his disciples, 2âYou know that after two days the Passover is coming, and the Son of Man will be delivered up to be crucified.â 3Then the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders of the people were gathered together in the court of the high priest, who was called Caiaphas. 4They took counsel together that they might take Jesus by deceit and kill him. 5But they said, âNot during the feast, lest a riot occur among the people.â 6Now when Jesus was in Bethany, in the house of Simon the leper, 7a woman came to him having an alabaster jar of very expensive ointment, and she poured it on his head as he sat at the table. 8But when his disciples saw this, they were indignant, saying, âWhy this waste? 9For this ointment might have been sold for much and given to the poor.â 10However, knowing this, Jesus said to them, âWhy do you trouble the woman? She has done a good work for me. 11For you always have the poor with you, but you donât always have me. 12For in pouring this ointment on my body, she did it to prepare me for burial. 13Most certainly I tell you, wherever this Good News is preached in the whole world, what this woman has done will also be spoken of as a memorial of her.â 14Then one of the twelve, who was called Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests 15and said, âWhat are you willing to give me if I deliver him to you?â So they weighed out for him thirty pieces of silver. 16From that time he sought opportunity to betray him. 17Now on the first day of unleavened bread, the disciples came to Jesus, saying to him, âWhere do you want us to prepare for you to eat the Passover?â 18He said, âGo into the city to a certain person, and tell him, âThe Teacher says, âMy time is at hand. I will keep the Passover at your house with my disciples.â â â 19The disciples did as Jesus commanded them, and they prepared the Passover. 20Now when evening had come, he was reclining at the table with the twelve disciples. 21As they were eating, he said, âMost certainly I tell you that one of you will betray me.â 22They were exceedingly sorrowful, and each began to ask him, âIt isnât me, is it, Lord?â 23He answered, âHe who dipped his hand with me in the dish will betray me. 24The Son of Man goes even as it is written of him, but woe to that man through whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would be better for that man if he had not been born.â 25Judas, who betrayed him, answered, âIt isnât me, is it, Rabbi?â He said to him, âYou said it.â 26As they were eating, Jesus took bread, gave thanks for it, and broke it. He gave to the disciples and said, âTake, eat; this is my body.â 27He took the cup, gave thanks, and gave to them, saying, âAll of you drink it, 28for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for many for the remission of sins. 29But I tell you that I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on, until that day when I drink it anew with you in my Fatherâs Kingdom.â 30When they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives. 31Then Jesus said to them, âAll of you will be made to stumble because of me tonight, for it is written, âI will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.â 32But after I am raised up, I will go before you into Galilee.â 33But Peter answered him, âEven if all will be made to stumble because of you, I will never be made to stumble.â 34Jesus said to him, âMost certainly I tell you that tonight, before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times.â 35Peter said to him, âEven if I must die with you, I will not deny you.â All of the disciples also said likewise. 36Then Jesus came with them to a place called Gethsemane, and said to his disciples, âSit here, while I go there and pray.â 37He took with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and began to be sorrowful and severely troubled. 38Then Jesus said to them, âMy soul is exceedingly sorrowful, even to death. Stay here and watch with me.â 39He went forward a little, fell on his face, and prayed, saying, âMy Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass away from me; nevertheless, not what I desire, but what you desire.â 40He came to the disciples and found them sleeping, and said to Peter, âWhat, couldnât you watch with me for one hour? 41Watch and pray, that you donât enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.â 42Again, a second time he went away and prayed, saying, âMy Father, if this cup canât pass away from me unless I drink it, your desire be done.â 43He came again and found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy. 44He left them again, went away, and prayed a third time, saying the same words. 45Then he came to his disciples and said to them, âAre you still sleeping and resting? Behold, the hour is at hand, and the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. 46Arise, letâs be going. Behold, he who betrays me is at hand.â 47While he was still speaking, behold, Judas, one of the twelve, came, and with him a great multitude with swords and clubs, from the chief priests and elders of the people. 48Now he who betrayed him had given them a sign, saying, âWhoever I kiss, he is the one. Seize him.â 49Immediately he came to Jesus, and said, âGreetings, Rabbi!â and kissed him. 50Jesus said to him, âFriend, why are you here?â Then they came and laid hands on Jesus, and took him. 51Behold, one of those who were with Jesus stretched out his hand and drew his sword, and struck the servant of the high priest, and cut off his ear. 52Then Jesus said to him, âPut your sword back into its place, for all those who take the sword will die by the sword. 53Or do you think that I couldnât ask my Father, and he would even now send me more than twelve legions of angels? 54How then would the Scriptures be fulfilled that it must be so?â 55In that hour Jesus said to the multitudes, âHave you come out as against a robber with swords and clubs to seize me? I sat daily in the temple teaching, and you didnât arrest me. 56But all this has happened that the Scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled.â Then all the disciples left him and fled. 57Those who had taken Jesus led him away to Caiaphas the high priest, where the scribes and the elders were gathered together. 58But Peter followed him from a distance to the court of the high priest, and entered in and sat with the officers, to see the end. 59Now the chief priests, the elders, and the whole council sought false testimony against Jesus, that they might put him to death, 60and they found none. Even though many false witnesses came forward, they found none. But at last two false witnesses came forward 61and said, âThis man said, âI am able to destroy the temple of God, and to build it in three days.â â 62The high priest stood up and said to him, âHave you no answer? What is this that these testify against you?â 63But Jesus stayed silent. The high priest answered him, âI adjure you by the living God that you tell us whether you are the Christ, the Son of God.â 64Jesus said to him, âYou have said so. Nevertheless, I tell you, after this you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of Power, and coming on the clouds of the sky.â 65Then the high priest tore his clothing, saying, âHe has spoken blasphemy! Why do we need any more witnesses? Behold, now you have heard his blasphemy. 66What do you think?â They answered, âHe is worthy of death!â 67Then they spat in his face and beat him with their fists, and some slapped him, 68saying, âProphesy to us, you Christ! Who hit you?â 69Now Peter was sitting outside in the court, and a maid came to him, saying, âYou were also with Jesus, the Galilean!â 70But he denied it before them all, saying, âI donât know what you are talking about.â 71When he had gone out onto the porch, someone else saw him and said to those who were there, âThis man also was with Jesus of Nazareth.â 72Again he denied it with an oath, âI donât know the man.â 73After a little while those who stood by came and said to Peter, âSurely you are also one of them, for your speech makes you known.â 74Then he began to curse and to swear, âI donât know the man!â Immediately the rooster crowed. 75Peter remembered the word which Jesus had said to him, âBefore the rooster crows, you will deny me three times.â Then he went out and wept bitterly.
