Lamentations 4-5
Lamentations Chapter 4
1How the gold has become dim! The most pure gold has changed! The stones of the sanctuary are poured out at the head of every street. 2The precious sons of Zion, comparable to fine gold, how they are esteemed as earthen pitchers, the work of the hands of the potter! 3Even the jackals offer their breast. They nurse their young ones. But the daughter of my people has become cruel, like the ostriches in the wilderness. 4The tongue of the nursing child clings to the roof of his mouth for thirst. The young children ask for bread, and no one breaks it for them. 5Those who ate delicacies are desolate in the streets. Those who were brought up in purple embrace dunghills. 6For the iniquity of the daughter of my people is greater than the sin of Sodom, which was overthrown as in a moment. No hands were laid on her. 7Her nobles were purer than snow. They were whiter than milk. They were more ruddy in body than rubies. Their polishing was like sapphire. 8Their appearance is blacker than a coal. They are not known in the streets. Their skin clings to their bones. It is withered. It has become like wood. 9Those who are killed with the sword are better than those who are killed with hunger; for these pine away, stricken through, for lack of the fruits of the field. 10The hands of the pitiful women have boiled their own children. They were their food in the destruction of the daughter of my people. 11The LORD has accomplished his wrath. He has poured out his fierce anger. He has kindled a fire in Zion, which has devoured its foundations. 12The kings of the earth didnât believe, neither did all the inhabitants of the world, that the adversary and the enemy would enter into the gates of Jerusalem. 13It is because of the sins of her prophets and the iniquities of her priests, that have shed the blood of the just in the middle of her. 14They wander as blind men in the streets. They are polluted with blood, So that men canât touch their garments. 15âGo away!â they cried to them. âUnclean! Go away! Go away! Donât touch! When they fled away and wandered, men said among the nations, âThey canât live here any more.â 16The LORDâs anger has scattered them. He will not pay attention to them any more. They didnât respect the persons of the priests. They didnât favor the elders. 17Our eyes still fail, looking in vain for our help. In our watching we have watched for a nation that could not save. 18They hunt our steps, so that we canât go in our streets. Our end is near. Our days are fulfilled, for our end has come. 19Our pursuers were swifter than the eagles of the sky. They chased us on the mountains. They set an ambush for us in the wilderness. 20The breath of our nostrils, the anointed of the LORD, was taken in their pits; of whom we said, under his shadow we will live among the nations. 21Rejoice and be glad, daughter of Edom, who dwells in the land of Uz. The cup will pass through to you also. You will be drunken, and will make yourself naked. 22The punishment of your iniquity is accomplished, daughter of Zion. He will no more carry you away into captivity. He will visit your iniquity, daughter of Edom. He will uncover your sins.
Lamentations Chapter 5
1Remember, LORD, what has come on us. Look, and see our reproach. 2Our inheritance has been turned over to strangers, our houses to aliens. 3We are orphans and fatherless. Our mothers are as widows. 4We must pay for water to drink. Our wood is sold to us. 5Our pursuers are on our necks. We are weary, and have no rest. 6We have given our hands to the Egyptians, and to the Assyrians, to be satisfied with bread. 7Our fathers sinned, and are no more. We have borne their iniquities. 8Servants rule over us. There is no one to deliver us out of their hand. 9We get our bread at the peril of our lives, because of the sword in the wilderness. 10Our skin is black like an oven, because of the burning heat of famine. 11They ravished the women in Zion, the virgins in the cities of Judah. 12Princes were hanged up by their hands. The faces of elders were not honored. 13The young men carry millstones. The children stumbled under loads of wood. 14The elders have ceased from the gate, and the young men from their music. 15The joy of our heart has ceased. Our dance is turned into mourning. 16The crown has fallen from our head. Woe to us, for we have sinned! 17For this our heart is faint. For these things our eyes are dim: 18for the mountain of Zion, which is desolate. The foxes walk on it. 19You, LORD, remain forever. Your throne is from generation to generation. 20Why do you forget us forever, and forsake us for so long a time? 21Turn us to yourself, LORD, and we will be turned. Renew our days as of old. 22But you have utterly rejected us. You are very angry against us.
Baruch 1-2
Baruch Chapter 1
1These are the words of the book which Baruch the son of Nerias, the son of Maaseas, the son of Sedekias, the son of Asadias, the son of Helkias, wrote in Babylon, 2in the fifth year, in the seventh day of the month, at the time when the Chaldeans took Jerusalem and burned it with fire. 3Baruch read the words of this book in the hearing of Jechonias the son of Joakim king of Judah, and in the hearing of all the people who came to hear the book, 4and in the hearing of the mighty men, and of the kingsâ sons, and in the hearing of the elders, and in the hearing of all the people, from the least to the greatest, even of all those who lived at Babylon by the river Sud. 5Then they wept, fasted, and prayed before the Lord. 6They also made a collection of money according to every manâs ability; 7and they sent it to Jerusalem to Joakim the high priest, the son of Helkias, the son of Salom, and to the priests and to all the people who were found with him at Jerusalem, 8at the same time when he took the vessels of the house of the Lord, that had been carried out of the temple, to return them into the land of Judah, the tenth day of Sivanâsilver vessels which Sedekias the son of Josias king of Judah had made, 9after Nabuchodonosor king of Babylon had carried away Jechonias, the princes, the captives, the mighty men, and the people of the land from Jerusalem, and brought them to Babylon. 10And they said: Behold, we have sent you money; therefore buy with the money burnt offerings, sin offerings, and incense, and prepare an oblation, and offer upon the altar of the Lord our God; 11and pray for the life of Nabuchodonosor king of Babylon, and for the life of Baltasar his son, that their days may be as the days of heaven above the earth. 12The Lord will give us strength and light to our eyes. We will live under the shadow of Nabuchodonosor king of Babylon and under the shadow of Baltasar his son, and we shall serve them many days, and find favor in their sight. 13Pray for us also to the Lord our God, for we have sinned against the Lord our God. To this day the wrath of the Lord and his indignation is not turned from us. 14You shall read this book which we have sent to you, to make confession in the house of the Lord upon the day of the feast and on the days of the solemn assembly. 15You shall say: To the Lord our God belongs righteousness, but to us confusion of face, as at this dayâto the men of Judah, to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, 16to our kings, to our princes, to our priests, to our prophets, and to our fathers, 17because we have sinned before the Lord. 18We have disobeyed him and have not listened to the voice of the Lord our God, to walk in the commandments of the Lord that he has set before us. 19Since the day that the Lord brought our fathers out of the land of Egypt to this present day, we have been disobedient to the Lord our God, and we have been negligent in not listening to his voice. 20Therefore the plagues have clung to us, along with the curse which the Lord declared through Moses his servant in the day that he brought our fathers out of the land of Egypt to give us a land that flows with milk and honey, as at this day. 21Nevertheless we didnât listen to the voice of the Lord our God, according to all the words of the prophets whom he sent to us, 22but we each walked in the imagination of his own wicked heart, to serve strange gods and to do what is evil in the sight of the Lord our God.
Baruch Chapter 2
1Therefore the Lord has made good his word which he pronounced against us, and against our judges who judged Israel, and against our kings, and against our princes, and against the men of Israel and Judah, 2to bring upon us great plagues such as never happened before under the whole heaven, as it came to pass in Jerusalem, according to the things that are written in the law of Moses, 3that we should each eat the flesh of our own son, and each eat the flesh of our own daughter. 4Moreover he has given them to be in subjection to all the kingdoms that are around us, to be a reproach and a desolation among all the people around us, where the Lord has scattered them. 5Thus they were cast down and not exalted, because we sinned against the Lord our God in not listening to his voice. 6To the Lord our God belongs righteousness, but to us and to our fathers confusion of face, as at this day. 7All these plagues have come upon us which the Lord has pronounced against us. 8Yet have we not entreated the favor of the Lord by everyone turning from the thoughts of his wicked heart. 9Therefore the Lord has kept watch over the plagues. The Lord has brought them upon us, for the Lord is righteous in all his works which he has commanded us. 10Yet we have not listened to his voice, to walk in the commandments of the Lord that he has set before us. 11And now, O Lord, you God of Israel who have brought your people out of the land of Egypt with a mighty hand, with signs, with wonders, with great power, and with a high arm, and have gotten yourself a name, as at this day: 12O Lord our God, we have sinned. We have been ungodly. We have done wrong in all your ordinances. 13Let your wrath turn from us, for we are but a few left among the heathen where you have scattered us. 14Hear our prayer, O Lord, and our petition, and deliver us for your own sake. Give us favor in the sight of those who have led us away captive, 15that all the earth may know that you are the Lord our God, because Israel and his posterity is called by your name. 16O Lord, look down from your holy house and consider us. Incline your ear, O Lord, and hear. 17Open your eyes, and see; for the dead that are in Hades, whose breath is taken from their bodies, will give to the Lord neither glory nor righteousness; 18but the soul who is greatly vexed, who goes stooping and feeble, and the eyes that fail, and the hungry soul, will declare your glory and righteousness, O Lord. 19For we do not present our supplication before you, O Lord our God, for the righteousness of our fathers and of our kings. 20For you have sent your wrath and your indignation upon us, as you have spoken by your servants the prophets, saying, 21âThe Lord says, âBow your shoulders to serve the king of Babylon, and remain in the land that I gave to your fathers. 22But if you wonât hear the voice of the Lord to serve the king of Babylon, 23I will cause to cease out of the cities of Judah and from the region near Jerusalem the voice of mirth, the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom, and the voice of the bride. The whole land will be desolate without inhabitant.â â 24But we wouldnât listen to your voice, to serve the king of Babylon. Therefore you have made good your words that you spoke by your servants the prophets, that the bones of our kings and the bones of our fathers would be taken out of their places. 25Behold, they are cast out to the heat by day and to the frost by night. They died in great miseries by famine, by sword, and by pestilence. 26You have made the house that is called by your name as it is today because of the wickedness of the house of Israel and the house of Judah. 27Yet, O Lord our God, you have dealt with us after all your kindness and according to all your great mercy, 28as you spoke by your servant Moses in the day when you commanded him to write your law in the presence of the children of Israel, saying, 29âIf you wonât hear my voice, surely this very great multitude will be turned into a small number among the nations where I will scatter them. 30For I know that they will not hear me, because they are a stiff-necked people; but in the land of their captivity they will take it to heart, 31and will know that I am the Lord their God. I will give them a heart and ears to hear. 32Then they will praise me in the land of their captivity, and think about my name, 33and will return from their stiff neck and from their wicked deeds; for they will remember the way of their fathers who sinned before the Lord. 34I will bring them again into the land which I promised to their fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, and they will rule over it. I will increase them, and they wonât be diminished. 35And I will make an everlasting covenant with them to be their God, and they will be my people. I will no more remove my people Israel out of the land that I have given them.â
